Do women hate The Revenant? | Review + Thoughts

The Revenant is a 12 time Oscar nominated movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by none other than Alejandro González Iñárritu (whose film Birdman won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay last year).

It tells the story of Hugh Glass, a frontiersman and fur trapper who suffers a terrible injury and...well, even though you can tell what might happen from the title, you probably want to watch it and find out for yourself.

The film is fantastic, there's no doubt, but some feel it might be too brutal and violent for women to enjoy. Wait, what year are we in again?

Ever since I heard of this movie I was excited to watch it. It came out just a few days ago in the UK and I didn't wait any extra days to watch it. So, do women hate The Revenant?

Liking this movie or not comes down to personal preference. In fact, I'd say if someone doesn't like it they're probably used to superficial stories with no human element. Yes, The Revenant is a violent movie, but it's because human beings, when brought down to their instincts, are that way.

The protagonist of the film, Hugh Glass, suffers pain almost inimaginable for someone like me, and probably you as well. Physical and emotional pain that translates perfectly while watching the film. It's a gripping story that will have you on the edge of your seat for most of its duration.

Can you tell that kind of story and expect those results in the audience without showing blood, dead bodies, fights and pure instincts of survival? I think not.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy are absolutely fantastic in it, no wonder they both got nominated for awards as well. I would like to include a special mention for Will Poulter (you've probably seen him in The Maze Runner), who has proved this acting skills and I hope goes on to doing a lot more amazing stuff in the future.

Liking the movie or not comes down to what you're looking for in a film, no matter your gender. As an overall review, this is one of the greatest movies I've ever watched and it's one of my favorites in the running towards that final golden statue.

Ps. I hope 2016 is Leo's year and he finally gets the award he deserves.
